THE PROJECT
This project is designed to fill a need identified by the Veterans Administration Medical Center, for good affordable housing for homeless veterans. Developer Housing Visions Unlimited engaged Holmes▪King▪Kallquist & Associates to design a supportive housing environment for fifty veterans on the site of a long-abandoned community center. The building includes 44 one-bedroom and 6 two-bedroom apartments on the two main floors. The lower level, with a separate entry, provides offices for on-site case managers and community facilities include a meeting room, fitness area, computer lab, and laundry. Locating case managers within the facility is designed to help the veterans overcome underlying problems such as posttraumatic stress and substance abuse which contribute to their housing situation. The structure, which is seeking LEED Platinum, is wood framed and clad in a mix of natural stone veneer and high recycled-content steel siding
