THE PROJECT

Holmes▪King▪Kallquist & Associates was asked to restore the roof of this 1871 National Register structure; Syracuse University’s first building. The work included replacing an asphalt shingle roof installed in 1977 after the original slate on the mansards and towers was removed. New polychrome slate, matching the original Horatio Nelson White design, was selected based on scraps of original slate and historic photographs. The extensive sheet metal and cast-iron trim was restored, a modified bitumen roof was installed on the low-pitched roof areas, and the built-in gutters were relined.
