Landmark Theatre Marquee

Syracuse, NY

THE PROJECT

The project involved the removal of the circa late 1950s marquee that replaced the original 1928 marquee and replaced it with a digital replication of the 1928 version. The marquee’s original magnetic letter sign was replaced with digital signage on the north and south sides and a fixed display panel was created on the front (east) elevation. The formed metal of the underside of the replicated marquee ceiling was faithfully recreated from the original drawings, and the incandescent tracer lighting, including the ceiling, was replaced with contemporary LED lighting matching the 1928 pattern. The rebirth of the Landmark’s marquee honors the history and design of the original, while also providing contemporary digital technology for advertising upcoming events. The new marquee has re-energized the presence of the theatre on South Salina Street and re-established, visually, its preeminence in the cultural life of downtown Syracuse, reminding us of a time when the street was lined with similar marquees and patrons awaiting the next show.
